I have a 98 Forester. The mud gards and plastic around the bottom of the
car is looking a little dull. Any suggestions on how to spruce it up? TIA

Armor All.

Had same issue with mine got to the point where Armor All/Back to Black were
no longer up to the job.

Bought something that did the job very well and lasts well, can't be arsed
to go out to the garage now and get the name/brand details, will post it
tomorrow !.

"Armor-All" is like cancer for cars. That shit should be outlawed.
If you knew how it works (Chemically) you would not allow it anywhere near
your car.
This shit bonds with the plastic/vinyl and becomes an unstable "vehicle" for
the formaldahyde that is used to keep plastic and vinyl soft.
The cloudy film you find on the inside of the windows is Formaldahyde that
has boiled off from plastic surfaces.
Add "Armor-All"...now the formaldahyde can boil off at room temps, here is
where the BAD SHIT happens....
Once you stop using or reduce the use of "Armor-All" the plastic will dry
out, become brittle, shrink, crack and generally fail.
A lot of people are impressed with it at first, it looks shiny, clean. They
dont see it long term.
On the other hand, stuff that is *SILICONE* based will look good, wont screw
up the plastic..but wont last long either.

As promised had a look in the garage today, I used, Carplan (a Tetrosyl
brand) Black trim wax, bloody messy stuff, but worked really well and lasts
well.

Hey Fafoofnik,
I hope your "doctorate" isn't in chemistry. You state that a silicone
based compound is superior to Armorall. Guess what? Armorall *is* a
silicone based compound. Look it up on their website.

I just recently gave my 2000 OB the 'Mother's 3-stage wax system. In order
to avoid wax drying & discoloring the black vinyl & plastic trim, I used
another Mother's product called Back-To-Black. I used it first to prep the
plastic & vinyl trim so as to work as a barrier. Worked great. Wax over
application came right off. Then gave all my plastic & vinyl trim, mirroes,
mud guards, etc. a good coat. Looks real nice. Brought back that 'just off
the lot' sheen to the rubber also.

I've read about Armor All being bad in the long haul. Seriously, what's the
scoop on that? Silicone isn't going to hurt anything, is it? It's an
outstanding product, but I don't use it because of the possibility it will
kill my plastics...

Armor all is water/silicone based and leads to drying out of plastic, vinyl
and leather. Cracking and discoloration are a big problem.

It may be silicone based, but silicone by itself will not dry. So you need
something that will dry without being sticky, that's water.

I may be a bit dense today, but I'm not sure what you're trying to say
here...

Thank you. It seems like every plasic "care" product I've tried actually deteriorates the surface
over the long haul ..then you're hooked - just like Prozac. It's a clever business model, until the
masses awaken.

I can't stand the Armor All slime feel. It's obscene. -Danny
