Guards/Mud Flaps

This is about the small rectangular guards in FRONT of the rear tires on a Limited Crosstrek 2017.
Highway debris ripped one of mine off. Are they essential? Is their purpose to stop dirt from going into the undercarriage? Where to purchase? Easy install?

Yes of course they are essential. I got mine from here last year https://www.subaruonlineparts.com/sku/j101cfj300.html and still working. Protecting the lower painted areas of from stone chips and unsightly mud.
