Front Speaker System

Andrew

Hi,

Just wondering what the maximum size splits does the 2003 Impreza take at
the front? Somebody told me it was 5.25" ? Is it possible to fit a woofer of
greater diamater or not because it is also deeper?

I've heard there isnt alot of room to play with in terms of depth, what
would be the maximum depth of woofer i should purchase?

Thanks
Andrew

I believe my '02 WRX has the same interior as other Impreza's. When I
had my speakers replaced, they couldn't even put a 4" speaker behind the
stock grill without modification. There was enough room width-wise for
the 6.5" speakers I wanted, but to even fit the 4" depth-wise, they had
to fabricate a mount to move the cone as close as possible to the grill.
The stock 5.25" woofers have the smallest magnet I've ever seen on a
speaker of that size. Crutchfield.com doesn't list any speakers that
will fit of any diameter.
That said, the 4" speakers from JL Audio sound an order of magnitude
better than the bigger ones they replaced, even (especially?) at
extended volume levels.

Based on measurements taken on my '02 WRX, I would be surprised if a
6in driver could be placed in the front without having to cut the door
plastic. The problem is both depth behind the speaker, and clearance
in front of it (between speaker and plastic). I have installed 5 1/4in
Infinity Kappa speakers in mine using a 1/2 inch spacer/adaptor, and
it was real close; I had to trim some plastic ribs from the inside of
the door panel.
If you visit my server <chester.uccs.edu/wrx/> and look thru the junk
there you will find fotos, and a .txt file describing the process
(wrxaudio.txt? too lazy to go over and look ;-) with actual measured
clearances. Also a pin-out for the stereo and some other stuff, help
yourself to anything that looks interesting.

ByeBye! S.

Hi Steve!

Thanks so much for your help!
I am looking at some infinity kappas since they are quite shallow I'm not
aware of any other decent splits that are of a similar depth.

I will check out your install pics!!

I had no problem putting 6.5" JBL speakers into the stock location in the doors
of my 02 WRX. I did have to make up some 5/8" spacers/adapters but they fit
just fine, and there's even some more depth available.

I am using Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components up front with
spacers. Had to push out the panel plastic with the assistance of a
heat gun because of the rattling.

I would caution you if you plan on getting the Kappa's. The metal
dome tweeter stinks--very harsh and glaring.

I have previous experience with the Infinity 605cs and feel it is a
much better (and far cheaper) system. Basket depth and thickness will
cause you less problems too.
