Exhaust question

'00 OBW that has an exhaust leak where the mid-pipe meets with the muffler
tailpipe. I priced out the mid pipe/tail pipe w/muffler at Autopart
International and all together its $410 with gaskets and spring bolts.

I might be able to justify if the piping was rotted, rusted or cracked but
all then piping is fine except for this union of the two flanges and gasket.

So my question is, has anyone cut-out the section and used a 4" section of
2" pipe you can get at Autozone with the clamps with any success? Do the
exhaust clamps really tighten correctly enough to seal off the exhaust from
leaking?

Remove pipe, take it to somewhere that does welding and problem
solved. Won't use AutoZone quality pipe as it will rust away in a few
years. Use stainless if you want to go with the cut it out and
replace a section method. Those muffler clamps work well so no
problem there.

I haven't been to a muffler shop lately, but I'd guess that you'd get
out of there for well less than a $100 bill with a welded repair.

I've done my share of clamping pieces into exhaust systems in the
past... weldings better.
