broken rear finishing lamp

Hi

My nephew was playing catch near my 2002 outback and he broke the
"rear finishing lamp" (thats what the dealer called it) its the red
plastic piece covering both brake lights that goes across the entire
back door with the word subaru on it.

The dealer quoted me $230 for the part and $80 to install. I did a
search on this group for discounted parts and spent a good part of
yesterday searching for it cheaper with no success.

Does anybody know where I could find this part cheaper and also is it
very difficult to install.

Call a junkyard and see if they can find you
one. I'm not familiar with replacing the
taillight, but I couldn't imagine paying a
dealer $80 to replace it. Take a look at the
broken one and see how hard it is to remove.
If you're uncomfortable with working on it,
take it to a independent shop. I'd guess they
would change it for $50 while you wait.

1. Do a search on eBay for it, then "save this
search" and have it do the email alert thing.

2. If you're in a southern/warm state, call a
friend or relative who lives up north (I see very
few `rus in GA [and almost all I see are out of
state tags] but I saw tons of em all over in NJ)
to check salvage yards. All you need is one that
got totalled with front-end or side damage,
should be pretty easy!
