Hi everyone,

I need to replace a front CV axle on my 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5L. The OEM part number is 28321SG010.
I’m getting quotes close to $1000 per side (parts only, no labor), which seems very high.
For those who have used aftermarket axles, which brands have you had good experience with?
Also, would you recommend going with a used OEM axle from a junkyard instead of aftermarket?
I’m mainly looking for something reliable for daily driving, and I’m located in Canada.

Thanks!

I had one put in last week and the car started shuddering accelerating from a stop. They replaced it with one from Subaru and all is smooth .

You get what you pay for in this regard. Inexpensive axles are pure junk. But that doesn't mean you have to pay dealer prices either. Axles often fail due to boots tearing which is easily fixed but of course mileage will eventually do the same. Car-part.com shows vehicles with your part and their mileage, so if you can get used axles from a low mileage donor that's probably the safest bet, otherwise shop around and look for units no less than maybe $400.

I haven't had any problems with GSM. However, what exactly is wrong with your current axle? Is it making a clicking noise? Is the boot torn, can you see the tear? Or did someone show you some grease on the outside and tell you it is due to a bad boot?

CVJ Axles in Denver rebuilds OEM cores at a reasonable price. After three failures with aftermarket parts (over $300 each) I ordered two for my 2005 Legacy from CVJ. There’s a core charge so you want to return your OEM axles if you still have them. They will not accept aftermarket cores.
My costs were $139 per axle, plus a $50.00 upgrade to the OEM boot (big upgrade over silicone) and $89.00 for each core, which I don’t have. So just under $600.00 for two axles, and they are as close to OEM as you can get. OEM for my car is around $500.00 each. You may want to Google “rebuilt CV near me” and see if there’s anybody in your area that does this work. I think shipping was $89 per axle, but I’m picking them up.
