Obvious grinding noise when I press the brake pedal and shift into reverse. As soon as I release the brake pedal the sound goes away completely. Then when I hit the brakes again (light or hard) the noise returns. It seems to operate normally with no unusual noise in forward and also when moving in reverse. Any ideas?

Identify the model.
Have a professional measure / test the CVT transmission gear engagement with a scan tool.
Capture 150 mL of transmission fluid that can be sent for testing if need be.

I have had brake pads disintegrate on me in the past check pads and rotors.
