2004 H-6

Jeff

I have a question for the group, I bought a new 2004 H-6 35th Anniversary
Outback on Friday. It started to make a rather obvious and loud clicking
noise. I returned it to the dealership on Saturday morning and was given a
loaner to drive.

I called today and was told it was the timing belt tensioner and it needed
to be replaced and they had ordered the parts and would try to have it ready
on Wednesday.

This is my question, is this a common problem in Subaru H-6s? Has anyone
else had a similar problem?

TIA

Jeff

My LLBean clatters a bit when started below 40 deg F.
It definitely comes from the front of the engine, around
the timing cover. It's not loud enough or severe enough
to warrant taking the thing apart yet. I had a Ford Contour
with a 2.5 V- at one time and remembered reading about
the timing chains on them being noisy when cold.

This only happens when the engine is warn (or at least as well as I can tell
on a car with 43 miles on it, I am concerned about whether this is a problem
with the 6 or just an aberration.

Thanks for the information.

Hell it's a common problem with th eH4's too. I have my third
tensioner installed.

Hrmm. My ticking only happens when cold and goes away when warmed
up.

The only surprise here is that the clowns didn't have one in stock.
Let's just say it's a fast mover.

I've not had a similar problem with my '02 VDC H6 (20 months/29k miles).
Hope it works out well.

I've got about 1800 miles on my 04 OBW LLBean H6. No engine noise- just a
very low noise and slight vibration from the rear when turning from a dead
stop.

Thank you all for your replies, I am somewhat concerned but these types of
things are why new cars have warranties.

I plan on getting full documentation of this repair in case it turns out to
be a recurring problem.

Have a good day.
