'03 SE first tankful @ 26 mpg! :-)

We got my wife an automatic '03 Special Edition L Sedan right off the showroom
floor* two weeks ago and she got 26 MPG on the first tankful! They say to keep
the revs down for the first 1000miles, so apparently she is doing that! We did
have a 90 minute backroads trip in there, but it's even more remarkable as she
only drives 7½ miles to work, sometimes twice/day.
* We had looked at RAV4s and CRVs but they are pricey, especially for the
features, so we decided to just buy a Legacy. The local dealer had a blue 5spd
SE sedan outside, and though she had been wanting to go with an automatic,
she'd been getting sick of shifting for the last 20+ years, she did like the
car, just as she does our GT wgn. So we went inside and started to figure
numbers, and I heard our kids laughing loudly by the drinking fountain. I
hurried over there and told them to settle down. On the way back, I passed a
car we'd not noticed; a silver SE sedan with an automatic parked behind two
Porsches, a two Saabs. I (loudly) told my Mrs about it, and the salesman asked
if we'd rather have an auto, and if she'd like to drive it. After they moved
the other 4 cars out of the way, she did drive it, we figured numbers for it,
and picked it up that evening!
Terry - '03 Silver Legacy SE sedan - 36 miles!
'02 Regatta-Red GT wagon 5spd - 23k miles
Yakima / TandeMover / Rockymount rack

Congrats on the new purchase! That's great mileage for a new vehicle.
Most I've squeezed out of our Forester has been 22 mpg. Come to think
of it, neither car has been used for a road trip. Hmm, road trip,
sounds like a plan!
