Trailer Wiring 04 Outback Wagon

What kind of wiring harness/adapter do I need for trailer wiring? Whiitney
has converter for $10 but it doesnt say it plugs in to factoryy harness.
Etrailer has adapters that plug in to factory for $30-40. Which do I need?
Has anyone used hidden hitch on their obw? thanks

I installed a hitch from Etrailer on my 2003 Outback wagon. I think their
wiring adapter was about $35. It plugs directly into the factory 6 pin
plug, however their instructions were not correct for locating the plug.
They claimed it was under the drivers side tail light access panel. It is
actually located on the passenger side of the rear compartment, and can be
accessed by removing the small carpeted panel to the right of the spare tire
hatch, and then removing the foam insulation underneath. They both just
snap out. The wiring with the connector was taped to the main harness.

The dealer-installed hitch comes with the wiring already installed and
routed to the receptor. The wire seems to come out of the bottom of the
"trunk" floor under the car.

I purchased the wiring harness (4 pin) and the actual hitch from
eTrailer.com. I was very pleased with the purchase. The only complaint
I had was that the hitch was a little banged up when I received it.
However, no more so than putting it on my vehicle and driving for a few
weeks. The harness installation was a no brainer. As stated
previously, just lift out the carpet section on the passenger side and
you can't miss the harness. Total wiring installation is less then 5
minutes! The hitch itself was installed in about 30 minutes with the
hardest part being the movement of the charcoal canister. Again, the
instructions were fairly clear on what to do.
