Subaru Fuel economy

i'll say it again... your milage is in no way indicative of the milage
of the overwhelming majority of STi owners.... or of subaru owners in
general, for that matter. i don't know how you're driving, but it
seems like a lot of flat highway miles with cruise control set to <75
mph.
(just so people don't go assuming they'll be getting 27 mpg... fact
is, it is highly likely that they will not.)

I agree with Ken. My '02 WRX wagon has a similar weight to the STi,
with a smaller, less powerful engine. I've only averaged about 18.5
miles per gallon over the last year, about 20,000 miles. Even when I
take 3.5 hour one-way all-highway trips through speed-trap riddled New
Hampshire and Vermont, I still only get 23 mpg. Maybe if I drove my car
like it was a Honda Insight I could approach 27-28mpg. If I wanted to
do that, I certainly would not have spent the extra money to get a WRX
over a TS or RS Impreza.
If I had a WRX STi, I'm pretty sure my fuel mileage would be a bit worse
than I get now. I don't even drive that fast top speed wise most of the
time. But I do enjoy accelerating hard up to that speed, and holding it
as I go up long steep grades. In my experience, not many speed traps
are on uphill grades of a highway. That's where, If I'm in the mood, I
go the fastest.
I'm guessing the original poster also will get 40,000 or more miles out
of his tires. I don't think driving that way is in any way wrong. Just
that he probably has the wrong car for his driving style.

I do drive like an old grandpa most of the time. Barely getting above
3000 rpm on a normal basis. 90% of my driving is commuting to work at
70 mph on flat interstate.
So, I would have to agree that most folks who buy a STi do not get
the same kind of mileage I get. And I would guess most folks don't
use it as a commuter vehicle.
I have owned my STi for only a couple months and am approaching 5000
miles on it. So, it gets driven a lot!
I live in Idaho so, there is plenty of opportunity to climb steep
hills. The thing is, the STi does climb the steepest of grades at any
speed I want with very little effort.

I guess I should have put in the disclaimer, "drive like and old
grandpa and you are likely to get 25 mpg." Drive it like it was
intended to be driven and you will get 18 mpg.

There is the 1% of the time that I do hot rod a little.

I have been very happy with the mileage on my 2003 Outback - on trips it
has been around 27-29 mpg. Since the Subaru only has about 6500 miles - it
should get even better...

Evening

I have a '94 Legacy Turbo (2.5l) AWD etc. Love the car. Gets about 25mpg (in
Victoria BC). I think something must be wrong, but the dealer says "it's a
turbo".
