Fuel for Subaru Legacy Outback

dug hall

Have recently bought a '99 Legacy Outback in the UK and wonder what fuel to
use. Inside the filler 'flap' it says that only 'super plus' unleaded fuel
be used. In the uk, this is 10% more expensive than regular unleaded fuel.

What happens if I use the regular fuel? Why should I use the 'Super plus'?
Could I do any damage using regular?

Thanks

Dug

I have a '99 Legacy Outback (I'm in the US). I use most of the times
regular fuel (87 octane, I believe) without any problems. In my owner
manual it says to use at least regular unleaded fuel.

Dan

I've got a 2001 H6 Outback and run it on normal unleaded, and it runs fine.
The engine management system should detect the type of fuel and adjust the
engine as necessary.

The ECM doesn't detect the AKI of the fuel. The fuel with a
lower-than-recommend AKI will cause the engine to knock. The ECM will
hear the kock via a piezoelectric knock sensor and retard the timing,
preventing further knock as well as reducing power, throttle response,
and fuel economy. Even my Phase-II EJ25 runs terribly on 87AKI. Its
10:1 compression ratio is deserving of better fuel.

ive found that we can run our 99 OB on 87 octane but it does gets better
mileage on 89 or higher
so your not really saving any money and it will run better on the higher
octane.

Do you own an AWD BMW as well as the Outback? How do you like it?
Does it employ torsen diffs?

Yes, after 80,000 miles of fuel and mileage analysis, I've found that I get
30% better miles per gallon with 93-octane gasoline, but it only costs 15%
more. That's win-win.

I think you're joking, but in case you aren't, can you post the
details of your analysis? A 30% increase seems a bit high.
