Power steering fluid what not to do

Working on a 2014 Legacy Sport. Here is what I tried to do and where it went wrong!

Power steering flush:

Front of vehicle jacked up on stands.

Disconnect the PS return hose from the reservoir. Drain, then plug the reservoir and refill with ATF.

Place clear plastic tubing over the PS return hose and secure with a hose clamp. Free end of tubing goes into a collection bucket.

Helper starts the vehicle and turns the steering wheel Right/Left to end ranges (lock?)

I would continuously pour new PS fluid into the reservoir until clean, red fluid comes out of the collection tube.

Reconnect return hose, top off reservoir, and keep a close eye on the fluid level for a couple days.

Intuitively,
it makes sense to me that this is a safe method. The PS pump
(hopefully) gets a steady supply of fluid from the reservoir that I keep full. My concern would be if the pump sucks fluid from the reservoir faster than I could add it back in. Potentially, that could burn up the pump.

It went wrong basically at step 1

I confused the supply and return lines. I didn't have this diagram a the time. I pumped out the reservoir then removed the supply line, the lowest one on the reservoir. (See diagram). Put a plug on the reservoir, then put the other end of the hose I removed in a bucket. Refilled the reservoir, then started the and moved the steering wheel.

Immediately the the pump started screaming so I stopped what I was doing, turned off the car, and started reconnecting the hose.

I refilled to the cold line and the reservoir and started to foam when I started the car and turned the steering wheel. I started burping/bleeding the lines by starting the car and turning the steering wheel. More foam and pump noise but I managed to get everything back to normal, sort of. Nothing is leaking, the pump is not making noise, but when driving there is a pulsation or vibration on the steering wheel when turning. Does not do this in my driveway, just as I am driving down the street and seems to be more when I turn to the left. I continue to burp/bleed, but I see no bubbles in the tank and the level is holding. I definitely see the fluid flowing from the pump into the reservoir.

Any suggestions or should
I just buy a new pump?
