No good deed goes unpunished

320 Million and growing, we're not all thieves!

But there will be more and more as hard work pays less and less but
there is more and more wealth to gain by the political means.

Uh that would be because there never was a lawsuit. This is just a BS internet
story about a BS TV story.

Don't you have contract law in the states?
Offer : acceptance : "CONSIDERATION"

The US does have contract, but it's been essentially destroyed.

Throughout the 20th-century, some very smart people decided that the old
British common-law tort system had flaws, and that they were going to fix
those flaws. Ever heard of the old saw, "The cure was worse than the
disease"? Well this cure was almost fatal; the patient has yet to recover
from it, if he ever will. But the worst part is that the cure was
contagious, and certain other nations were partially infected as well.

The moral of US tort reform? Sometimes smart people are awfully stupid.

Never underestimate the will of some American people to get something
for nothing. We are a litigious nation of thieves.

Some people would whine if they were hung with a new rope.

The real moral of the story is to give stuff away and say, "I have stuff
to give away, do you want it?" and not specifiy what the stuff is in case
somebody wants to challenge that the stuff is really something
different -- one could give away a car, and then be challenged because
it's really a crossover, or an SUV is a truck, or whatever is a
whatsoever.

That isnt good enough to protect you from liability, Jeff. You know that.

Missed you around here.

I kind of take the BBC at their word.

It is unfortunately true that charity in America has to come with a
written waiver of liability or risk getting sued. It is the same reason
why so many large food chains have stopped giving extras/leftovers to
charities feeding the poor, chains as large as McDonald's and Starbucks.
They now throw the leftovers (some times only half an hour old) out in the
trash. Though I do remember hearing that Starbucks once got sued because a
homeless person dug a donut out of the trash and got sick afterwards.

Yeah. It sucks. The local convenience store used to give me sandwiches
when I was doing newspapers at 1AM (that had "expired" at midnight) even
though I never asked, because they knew I was out on the road and didn't
have a place to buy anything. The manager said the company told her she
HAD to throw the stuff away because of the liability. I told her, if *I*
take something for free, the liability is on *ME*. If I *BUY* something
and it makes me sick, that's different.

Easy there, the majority of us in the states are disgusted when this crap
happens. We are responsible people who hold our self accountable for our
actions. The problem is too many of the other assholes get the publicity.
I didn't see the show but now I'll have to watch it on demand. BTW, why
not just call the woman's bluff and take the car back?

I would have paid $5000 for a round-trip ticket from London to NO, taken
the car, painted THIS on it
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BkMdZDrAaG4/SyMy63c6III/AAAAAAAAB80/5c_xBTOEoCA/s320/E9700.jpg)
and run it into a stone wall...

Where've /you/ been?

Been here for some time. A couple of vacations this year to Europe,
Alaska, and Hawaii.

None planned until April or so at this point.

FYI the BBC does broadcast fiction. They call it entertainment.

In America there are millions of made up stories about frivolous and
unwarranted lawsuits but very few actual lawsuits that are frivolous and
unwarranted.

Go to any courthouse in the US and look at the docket. The vast majority
of law suits are businesses that are suing other businesses. You aren't
going to find any lawsuits where a person is suing somebody because they
incorrectly described a gift. That is just BS.

I would hope that most of us are still honest, and work for what we
get. That has not been the formula for easy wealth lately, and as the
jobs and income situation worsens, it is not likely to improve.

Many people LOVE to suffer some sort of legal slight so that they
can sue. Their lawyers love it even more.

America needs to make a law that lawyers can't advertise. That will get rid
of the scam suits soon enough. If memory serves most of the british
commonwealth countries didn't allow lawyers to advertise on TV or radio,
just in directories like local phone books. It may also be harder to get
frivolous cases before the courts also.

Nah, I competely believe that some money-grubbing lawyer contacted the
BBC, threatened a lawsuit, collected $20,000 and gave the mission $5,000...

You have me convinced that you are that stupid, but the BBC isn't.

In a.a.t maybe? I abandoned that group ages ago on account of the politics.
I see that this thread has been crossposted to a.a.t.

You must be rich. Our vacations are to more prosaic destinations, like PA.

I assume you're on rec.autos.tech then?

Alaska can be done for a reasonable cost. Europe was great when we
went as the dollar was up nicely, but now would be a different story I
think. The family has owned a condo in Hawaii for some time, so that's
the cheapest vacation we can do.

they may not be stupid, but the bbc is just like any other
government-sponsored organ - it toes the party line. and it propagates
a constant "drip drip drip" of poking at the u.s. in practically every
show, comedian's act, and government proclamation it broadcasts.

i think they do it to make their proles afraid of what might happen if
they entertained the idea of deserting and coming here. 'cos there's no
way they're staying there for the weather, women or food.
