Car stopped accelerating while driving

I was driving for an hour, stopped at a red light, and made a left turn. Once the turn was completed, I attempted to press the gas to accelerate but nothing was happening. There wasn't a loud revving noise, but a minor humming like you would hear when actually accelerating. I pulled over for about 15 seconds, tried again and it was fine.
I hope it's not the transmission, so any ideas or recommendations are greatly appreciated!
