Suspect Factory Oil filter Failure

Son changed the oil in his Forester today and sent these pictures! Change oil every 5k miles and use Subaru oil filters. He’s driving home tomorrow from South Dakota to Ohio. I told him to drive it some and change oil and filter again. Sure hope he makes it home. Told him to bring filter home so I can cut it open and see what it looks like.
