Stopping 05 OWB Seat Chime

Don, sorry I read your post too quickly...I believe you can skip/ignore
that step. Alternately, you might try actually "starting" the engine at
that point. I have done both again today in the Tribeca and it still
works for me. Worked in the '05 OB, too. I suspect it'll work in all
the '06 models as well.

The actual Subaru tech manual only says: "Repeat fastening and
unfastening the driver's seat belt 20 times within 30 seconds after
turning the ignition switch ON. Enabling and disabling cutting [off] is
done with the same operation. (The setting is changed for both the
driver's seat and passenger's seat.)" At that point, I think you are
done, it would seem. My version of the instructions is a culmination of
several other folks' successful attempts at this, so perhaps less is
more???

I still have a feeling that some folks are not actually connecting the
fastener all the way to "click" before unclicking it. Also, one
click/unclick combination is equal to one "time".

If I think of something else, I'll post it...for what it's worth.

Good luck, and keep us posted! -Karen-

Sandy, glad to hear you were successful. I was beginning to think I had
failed as a teacher :)

Hopefully others can make good use of your version here. I might just
steal it myself and post it (with your blessing), if this is the one
that everyone likes!

Silence IS golden :)

Sure, post it all you want, I don't care. No attribution necessary.
I'm just glad the dang thing shut up.
Silence IS golden :)

No kidding.

Just a note: When driving, I *always* wear my seatbelt. I've got a
cracked sternum from an accident I had in `93, cracked by the seatbelt.
Without a seatbelt, I'd have been impaled on the steering wheel. I
wore my seatbelt before then, as well, that's just the easiest example
of why.

The chime on the Subarus, though, is obnoxious. I'm glad they at least
added the code to the controller to watch for a disable toggle like
this. Despite how foolish some may think it is, it's a pretty normal
method in embedded systems design. "Watch for something that no one
would ever do except on purpose, use that as a signal to change modes."

Hi all. Please note:

At various times in this forum (e-mail address removed) has written:
Take your car to Subaru and ask them to disable the chime. Do you think that might be easier than looking incredibly stupid on usenet?
Only a moron would make such an assumption. And you my friend are truly a moron. Not only did you fall for a troll you then compound and advertise your stupidity by posting the above.
I am assuming you are a moron who writes about subjects he/she has no clue about.
Why am I not surprised? Maybe while you are masturbating with your seat belt you could buy an ice-cream cone and slap yourself in the middle of your forehead.
If I believed 0001% of what I read on the Internet I would be an idiot like you, way beyond troll bait.
Why don't you go over to the other idiot's house and play snap the seat belt?
Maybe that is because you possess half a wit.
Here is a post I made that you and the other moron maybe interested in.

and finally:
I am heading to more hospitable corners of the Internet.

Norm, try alt.stupid.morons; you should feel right at home there.

Bye. S.

i don't have an '05 obw to try it on - does anybody know if it works on
older models (like my '02 legacy se)?

........ tom klein

ps. not buckling up here in ontario costs 2 demerit points PER occupant
of the vehicle! (and no, i didn't vote for the government that passed
*that* particular law.) so let's all just skip the remarks about *why*
i want to know, and just say that i have an active curiosity...

You may want to call your Subaru dealer on this before you sit in your
car snapping your seat belt while the idiot trolls are laughing at you.
I guess the question is do you want to be laughed at by your service
manager or by a bunch of sixteen year olds on usenet? Your call.

I do and it don't!! (on 05)

As promised when I started this thread, I am reporting back.

And I am reporting that it definitely works.

The confusion may be this: when you have completed the sequence of
buckling/unbuckling, the chime WILL CONTINUE TO RING ONLY when you get
in the car, insert the key, and turn the engine on. You are not TOTALLY
disabling the chime. Apparently some folks thought that would be the
case.

If, with the engine running, you subsequently unbuckle for whatever
reason, the chime will not sound, and that is what seemingly annoyed
most folks. If the car was stopped and still running and you wanted to
reach across for something on the passenger seat floor, reach into the
back seat, whatever, that damn chime would ring, ring, ring. Now it
doesn't.

As an aside, I am amazed at the rudeness and vitriol that were
directed against some folks who weighed in on this thread.

I finally got it to work on about try number 26. For some reason the
engine had to be running to make the fix work. Obviously I remembered
to open the garage door or I wouldn't be writing this.

Bob, I sure agree with your aside about unnecessary rudeness.
