Squeaky window

P

P T

Right rear window on my '04 Forester (2 months old) SQUEAKS when it goes
up or down, about 75% of time. I called my service department, the woman
who answered the phone said something like, "Usually they just spray
some silicon on it. Try that and if it doesn't help, let us know."

Since 3 windows do not squeak, I know Subaru can build a car without
squeaky windows. Why am I supposed to bear the burden of fixing a
problem present since day 1? The help Subaru has provided assumes I have
a can of silicon, and I don't think I do. If all it takes is a squirt of
silicon, couldn't they just do that in 2 minutes and send my on my way
happily? Furthermore, if I do spray silicon "all over" will it make my
window a greasy mess? Will it get on my paint and make it a greasy mess?
I know if I go there and make a scene, I can get some help. I hate
making a scene. I gave them a check for the full purchase price of the
car, and haggled very little over the price. Is a little respect too
much to ask. Well, I guess you've got to fight for your right to party.

All that said, has anyone encountered this problem? Is there an easy
fix? Where do I spray the lubricant? Will WD40 work as well? What about
bicycle or motorcycle chain lube?

Thanks for listening.

Pete

[Sorry to vent. I guess this reminds me of an issue with a Saturn I had.
It always leaked, just a few drops, in the rain, on the driver's door. I
think a weld there wasn't flush. When I finally mentioned it, the dealer
applied a little dab of caulk to the weld. Problem solved. Although the
problem was present from day 1, I never complained about it, and when I
did, the car was out of warranty, so they charged me $35 or $40 dollars
for this. I always get fucked on these deals, and just see myself
getting fucked again. I guess you got to go in and start screaming at
them, really fucking screaming to get noticed. The squeaky wheel gets
oiled.]

I had this problem on a Mazda B2000 pickup truck. However the problem only
really started when I removed the window tint that was on there previously.
I scraped it off with a razor, but there was a sticky residue left behind
which made the window squeak. What I did was spray both sides of the window
with motorcycle chain lube, PJ1 to be exact. Use the blue and not the black
kind (the black is too sticky). At first it still squeaked so applied a
second coat real thick and haven't had a problem since.

You're welcome,
PooBah

I had a squeaky window in my MY02 Impreza. The dealer made the same
recommendation, which I followed. Worked fine, and saved a trip to the
dealer. (My dealer volunteered to do the spraying, but doing it myself
saved me the trip in.) The squeak has never recurred.

The way I did it was to pull the weather stripping back with a knife
blade, then sprayed the window under the stripping. It did leave a bit
of residue, which I wiped off after working the window a few times.

Good Golly!!

What a whiner!! Get a life and do something for yourself.

If you get so worked up about something this minor, you must really go
off the deep end over any serious problems!! Go take your
medication....

BTW, in the time it took you to complain, you could have made an
effort and fixed the problem yourself. And if that didn't work, then
go to the dealer.

Go walk through a hospital's burn unit, a pediatric ICU, etc., and see
how important is your damn squeak!

One of my rear windows ('03 forester) lets out
a loud squeal when going up or down, but only
after a rain. Once the window dries out (a day
or so after the rain) the window does just fine.
At first it annoyed me, but I'm living with it.

mikey.

Story about car noises.

10 years ago I bought brand new Toyota Tercel for about 12K. Car made
annoying rattling noise in the door. I took it to the dealer. They spend
LONG time, opened up entire door and found a nut which was not tight. They
fixed it.

The morale of the store (at least for me): once you buy a new car, it should
NOT makeany noises, other then normal operation noises. If dealer took the
time to fix $12K car, I think Subaru dealer should fix squeaky windows (and
not suggest custom remedy the problem himself).

After 400 miles I took my new Subaru Outback for wheel alignment (see my
older "pull to the right" thread). I think people should not accept
mediocrity. Neither noises or need for the wheel alignment after 400 miles
should be acceptable for a new vehicle.

What a whiner!! Get a life and do something for yourself.

As you are obviously not aware, a squeaky power
window is *not* a good thing. Squeaks are audible
vibrations, indicative of weather seal sticking/catching
on the glass while in motion. These vibrations can SHORTEN
the usable life of a power window motor, and it's associated
gearing, as the same resonant vibrations are transfered thru the
vibrating glass into the same. Best to fix it asap before you
have to shell out $200+ for a new power window motor
assy in a Year or two.
