I drove my daughters car home from the repair shop for her. She had a new transmission installed. I had never driven it before. I noticed there is a fairly loud whine from the rear of the car which may be normal for this car. I have no baseline to compare. I did an experiment and put the car in neutral while going down a long hill. The whine got louder as the car picked up speed even though the RPMs were dropping.

Could this just be wheel road noise? Looking for any suggestions

Probably no doubt a rear wheel bearing ( right rear ). Should be a 2 to 3 hundred dollar job at most ( honest ) repair shops.

Other choices are things that also stay the speed of the car, not the engine, so consider driveline/axles/etc. if they going to test drive it for you. Those are known for rear wheel bearing issues, especially in the rear.
