On cold mornings (or at least what counts as cold down here in Atlanta),
when I first start out I hear a fairly audible clicking sound that seems
to come from the engine. As the engine warms up the clicking goes away.
Is this anything I should be concerned about? I have just a little over
6000 miles on it.

My 2000 Forester has a tapping noise for the last 83,000 miles or
since new. Mine is caused by valve lifters waiting to get oil and or
the clearance to lessen. My taping last for about 30 seconds here in
Florida.

Could be what's called "piston slap" too. Though from what I have heard
that shows up on older engines, new ones. (Search the group on Google Groups
to get more info.)

I'd put mu money on this, too.

Talk to your dealer as there is a solution. They can replace short
engine block. That's what they did in my case.

However, this will not remove it completely. It will come back as you
put up more mileage on your engine. Not as loud as originally.

I know I don't sound too optimistic, but that's reality with 2.5L (and
probably 2.2L) 4 cyl. engine(s).

P.S. I use engine block heater 2 hours before get going and that reduces
it almost completely. It's good for your engine.

Cheers,
Voja

Valve lifters or fuel injectors. Normal.

Agreed - hydraulic valve lash adjusters filling with oil - they will
make some noise on startup. Completely normal. Should go away very
quickly in warm weather, may last a minute or so in cold weather.

If the noise persists for any long period of driving then you need to
run some engine oil cleaner through it as you may have a clogged lifter.
This is most likely not your case since your car is new. This can
happen on high mileage suby's or ones that have not had regular oil changes.

Ok. Thanks. I never noticed that sound on my 2001 that I had before the
2004 and I think the basic engine was very different in the 1992 that I
had before the 2001.

Is it possible the car got a different/cheaper oil filter at it's last
oil change?(I assume you;ve had at least one oil change).
Maybe someone chose a poor filter without an anti-drain back vavle? On
some cars (not certain about soobs) it helps assure oil is ready to
circulate at engine start-up.

just a guess

Also, a few years ago there were some timing belt tensioners making
ticking/knocking sounds. The shop should be able to pinpoint it.

I get the oil changed every 3000 miles. Problem is, it takes me six
months to accumulate 3000 miles.

I'll have them take a look at it the next time I take it in. Thanks.
