The speedometer and odometer are driven by an electrical pulse from the speed
sensor. You may have a bad speed sensor, bad wiring to the odometer or a bad
odometer. If you are not getting a Check Engine Light, it's probably not the
speed sensor, since in that car the speed sensor also sends signals to the ECU
and it would go into error reporting if it did not get a speed sensor signal.
And it would put the car in "limp" mode where it would not rev above 4000 rpm.

I posted this very same issue in this NG about 3 months ago, but
nobody had an answer. I have a 1990 with an intermittent speedo. It
probably isn't the Vehicle Speed Sensor since everything else under
the hood works fine including engine performance and fuel economy. I
have an extended warranty which is good up to 100,000 miles, so I'm
not going to worry about it until I get close to 99,000 miles -- I
figure that I have already gotten about an extra 10k on my extended
warranty already. Do you have an Outback, or Legacy sedan, and which
engine do you have ???
