Greetings! I have a LOT of cassette tapes that I would like to play in the car, which has a CD player, aux input for iPod, and USB. It's connected to my Android and also uses Android Auto for Waze. I have a portable tape player but it's not loud enough. I've searched for some kind of adapter but to no avail. Xferring the tapes to CD is too time consuming. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I use the aux audio input for my old iPod. Don't see why you could not use an earphone jack patch cord from you tape player to the same input on your Suburu. I don't know where it is on your car but on my 21 forester it's in the cubby just below the center entertainment stuff where the USB Jack's are located.

Thanks Dick. I've thought of that, but the manual seems to relegate that jack for iPods. Is the iPod output an auxiliary output or an earphone jack? My cassette player has an earphone jack with the level controlled by the volume control, just like a speaker. I wouldn't want to overload the input if it's only meant to handle the low-level signal of a non-variable aux output.

The iPod was made to drive earphones. Won't hurt to try. The car doesn't really know where the audio signal is coming from it just sees the audio signal. BTW I'm a retired EE, Silicon Valley refugee and an old time stereo nut.

Ok, worth a try! I'm an old-time (but too poor to retire) A/V tech and manager and hobbyist (Also worked at Advent on the Videobeam; remember those?). Certainly no EE (to my regret), but I've had enough impedance mismatches to remain cautious. Just wish I hadn't disposed of all my old cables and connectors. I'll manage. Thanks a lot, Dick!

Not to fret. I may have worked as an EE but had only a high school diploma. The half life of an EE degree was about six months anyway. The stuff I worked on, no school knew anything about. You had to teach yourself the stuff no one had ever seen before.

And many exploding electrolytics later ...

I knew enough to observe polarity and voltage ratings. I started out with tubes as a kid and moved on through all the changes over the years and ended up with a chip maker in Silicon Valley.

Tubes, like vinyl, will never die! You're a true success story and a worthy Subie owner! :>)

Thanks. I still have some vinyl but I'm no tube boob. Tubes circuits distort and I'm no fan of distortion of any kind be it of even or odd order harmonics. It's even order harmonics that a lot of folks think the like from tubes. Give me the linear responce of a well designed power FET Amp any ole day.

Dick, I found my old home-made multi-jack junction box made from a cigar box, and within were cables galore. In brief, the setup worked like you knew it would. Of course, when I tried it last night, I left the dome light on all night, but no harm done. Thanks for the encouragement!

I had the same problem in the past, what worked is a transmitter that plugs into the earphone place on the cassette player and transmit to your radio. It worked for me and I got my transmitter from Walmart. It was several years back I did that, it transmitted to a radio station. I hope this helps you.

I hook my phone by the earphone jack up to it, it works great for me too!

Hi, magpie #2 (great name!), My research did lead me to xmitters, but the cost and effort to use them dissuaded me. I found a good ol' 1/8-inch male-to-male cord in my junk box and just plug one end into the player output and the other into the Subaru Aux jack, hit the Media button, and I'm taken back to the 70s! Thanks for the suggestion.

Be sure to get a stereo cable if it's a stereo unit you're hooking up.
Fear not; a stereo cable also works perfectly with a mono recorder. I had a visit yesterday from some 40-ish friends who love, collect, and repair old tech from the 40s and 50s. We laughed about the small battery-powered mono cassette player sitting on my passenger seat, hooked up to the 2021 "entertainment center."
