Engine identification

I hired a friend to put a new motor in my 2009 Subaru Forrester while I was away. When I came back he was dead and I don’t know what the engine is in the car. I think it’s a 2006 and the engine identification stickers are all worn away. Is there anyway I can tell if the engine is compatible for my 2009 Subaru Forrester.?
