Which side to replace half-shaft ?

When I got my 90 Legacy both outer CV boots were torn, so I figured I'd
just drive it until I heard the clicking noise, then replace
half-shafts. Now it's 13,000 miles later, I hear clicking when turning
right.
But I could swear it sounds like it's coming from the left side. Is
this right? Clicking when turning right means it's the left side that's
bad? I know I need to replace both and rebuilt ones are only $60 +
core, but I'm a starving student so I want to do one at a time.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve!

When I got my 90 Legacy both outer CV boots were torn,

CV joints usually don't last long with torn boots; I'm simply amazed
that you have gone 13K like that! The Subaru CV axles will usually go
quite a ways after they start making noise, and fresh grease will
usually extend this grace period somewhat. I'd suggest that you
immediately stuff in some more grease, and install a set of el-cheapo
split boots. If it gets to where you can feel it in the steering,
you're getting pretty close to the end. Save your pennies, and do both
sides before winter sets in.
Anyway, on to your original question. If the clicking sounds like it's
coming from the left axle, that's probably the _worst_ one. The only
way I know to be sure is to put the front of the car up on jackstands,
start the engine, put it in 2nd gear and let the wheels spin at idle.
Have someone work the steering lock to lock while you listen to each
side. Be real careful if you attempt this, no sense in getting
squished over a $60 axle!

When you turn right, the load shifts to the left side of the vehicle so the
axle has more of a load. That's why when turning right, the left axle will
click and vise versa.
