which code reader for my subaru impreza?

hi there,i have a 2001 impreza 2.5 RS which is giving me intermittant
difficulty when starting. I would like to get a engine code reader for
it and would like to know what standard the engine management uses.

Is CEL coming on? I use my laptop and USB interface box I built from a
kit. There are many shareware to go with it.

Any OBD-II compliant code reader will do. But unless your check engine
light is lit, it's unlikely that the reader will be of any help to you,
especially if the car runs normally once you do get it started. Problems
like a weak fuel pump or a faulty pressure regulator just don't set
codes in the computer. You need to determine the exact conditions
when the car is difficult to start, like sitting overnight (X hours or
more) or sitting off for just a few minutes after running into the
bank, or trying to restart the car when it's only been running for
a minute or so after sitting overnight.

And Japanese cars have ISO OBD II connector not like Ford or GM specific
connectors.

All cars from 1996 model years and on (and some 1995 models like Subaru)
use the same standard OBD-II connector. It's the older models that used
proprietary connectors, and some were OBD-I like GM.

What Tony meant is that even if the connector is the same, the pins used
vary according to the protocol used. If getting a tool that is not
multi-protocol, make sure you buy the right one. Most tools nowadays
are multi-protocol though.
