Where is the neutral safety switch?

On a '97 Outback. I'd like to locate it so that I can bypass it, to
determine if it's the reason the starter won't.

If it's underneath the dash, or the console, I'd appreciate tips about
opening that up. How big a job is it?

Careful you don't disable the cruise control
disconnect switch on the clutch. That would
cause some excitement....

Do you have an automatic, or a manual? On an auto the neutral switch
will prevent the car from starting unless it is in park or neutral.
The switch is located on the transmission.
On a manual the neutral switch is also in the transmission but has
nothing to do with the starter lockout. For that there is a clutch
switch located at the top of the pedal linkage. There may be two
switches there if the car has cruise control, the second one is to
disengage the cruise when you step on the clutch.
