Whats your Choice?

Peter Johnston

Hi All:

Have heard lots of pros and cons regarding Subaru's. I'm not perfect
either - I tend to vent (too much) on some things that may be inevitable
with any car.

Given what we all know, it would be interesting to see the car manufacturer
of choice that people would buy, based on their knowledge and experiences.

Any thoughts?

My choices would be:
- Toyota
- Mazda
- Nissan
- Honda
- Ford

Then:

- Lexus
- Infiniti
- Acura

Forget European and any other NA manufacturer other than Ford.

There is more to car choice than manufacturers and models. For example, in
my area, there is only one nearby Honda dealer, and I would never go there
for service, so Honda was ruled out, even though it was my favorite car
(until I bought a Subaru).

On my not-ever-again-in-my-lifetime list: Ford.

I wasn't terribly happy with my Camry, either. It was fine till something
needed to be replaced, then it was a fortune in labor due to dumb design
choices.

For me it's not so much a choice of manufacturers as it is a choice of
specific vehicles. For instance, before I "discovered" Subaru, I very
nearly purchased a Geo Prism, which most of us know to be a Toyota Corolla
clone, although the uneducated still think of the old Geos as being American
cars. And although I wouldn't be caught dead in a front drive Ford, Ford's
RWD cars and trucks seem to be vastly better than their front drivers.
Which isn't saying much, I guess, but under different circumstances I might
be inclined to get a Mustang ragtop for the few sunny days a year we have
here. Another instance where I would potentially get an American car would
be if I could get my hands on an old hearse, which would usually be a
Cadillac or Lincoln. Only something Italian would get me as many stares as
that would. :)

I do like all of the Japanese nameplates though. The Koreans have a long
way to go before they'll ever get my dollar, and the Europeans sell
overpriced vehicles with overpriced parts because they can. And although GM
and Dodge have made great progress compared to where they were 20 or 30
years ago, it would be hard to convince me to buy any of their cars, not for
reliability reasons, but I mean, just look at GM's lineup! Boring.
Chrysler's is a bit more interesting, but after some prior Chrysler
experiences it would be hard to convince myself to buy a Magnum.

Yes... ;)
My choices would be:

Car:

Toyota
Subaru
Honda

(and not necessarily in that order--it would depend on what I was
looking to replace at the time. I might add BMW if I won the lottery,
wanted nothing but a toy and intended to keep it only as long as the mfr
was paying for maintenance! Then again, maybe not.)

Truck:

Toyota
Ford

(in that order unless my truck needs change radically from the past.)

Rick

Toyota for overall reliability and quality
Honda a close second
Subaru if I want a wagon (have one now)
Mazda for value but fun
Ford if I want a truck
Volkswagen when I want a good diesel.

Avoid Lexus/Infiniti, etc - why pay extra for the same stuff under a
different name?
Avoid Chrysler unless you like repairs
Avoid GM - horrid styling, ridiculous ergonomics (what are those guys
on???)
Nissan, well, ambivalent, but they're distant to Toyota
Hyundai, Kia?? kidding, right?

I've owned one Subaru and one Honda. The Honda lasted 6 years
longer and was FAR LESS MONEY to maintain than the Subaru was.

Buy a Honda Civic and forget about the Subaru unless you
have alot of extra money to waste.

Good idea.
I'll get two Civics instead the LGT 2005 and die of boredom.
One of my best friends is married to a woman who, for unknown reasons,
doesn't like me at all. Wanted to get an Impreza a couple years ago and his
wife threw a fit because I've got a Subaru and she doesn't like me. Anyway,
he ended up getting a Civic and although it hasn't caused him any problems,
he has more or less died of boredom. At least his old Cavalier gave him the
monthly mystery breakage to look forward to. No personality whatsoever in
that car - no wonder the kiddies deck them out with "phat rims" and
spoilers.
