Usable Outback Fuel Capacity

Yesterday I drove from Portland to Boise in my Outback before filling
up. I put 15.6 gallons in with the fill up. This got me wondering, I
know the Outback has a 17 gallon tank, but how much is actually
usable? If I ran it totally empty, how much gas would still be in the
tank? Or to ask the question another way, Out of that 17 gallons, how
much can I actually use?

Anybody have any knowledge or even good guesses?

Well, actually it's a 16.9 gal tank. I've never gotten below 1.5 left in the
tank.
At that point, the gauge had long been at 'E' and the warning light was on,
of course.
I'd rather not test the limit myself <smile>.
