Trying to remove housing over defroster/fan output = 02 WRX

BD

I have an 02 WRX wagon.

I'm currenly becoming a little obsessive about the little rattles and
noises I'm hearing in my car as I go over bumpy roads or crank my
stereo.

I'm looking at RAAM-mat for the doors etc...

But one annoying culprit is the strip of plastic which is right behind
the windshield - one where the VIN tag is placed. It rattles quite a
lot. The rattling stops when I press on it with my finger.

I want to remove this thing, and lay down some thin foam tape around
it to stop the rattling.

But I can't imagine how I'd get it out of there.

I've seen documents on how to take the doors apart (like for
installing speaker upgrades), but nothing for how to get this bit out.

Anyone have any idea how best to handle this?

Thanks!

Hmm, couldn't you get some black foam strip and shove it between the
windshield and dash lip? Sounds like that's what you want to do but
think you need to dismantle the dash. Cut the foam strip to length and
use a putty knife to push into the crevice. I doubt it's really going
to walk itself back out over time. Besides, that would be a cheap and
easy way to check if a foam strip between the windshield and dash lip
actually got rid of the noise you think is emanating from there.

Yes, that's reasonable - but the 'gap' is only about 1mm wide. I might
be better off with a thin strip of fabric or something than foam, just
to get some tension pushing across the entire width of it.
