We bought a 2020 Forester Sport in 2020. I was told that it has a timing chain. Does anyone know if this is true? And have they continued with the chain? We are currently looking at the 2024 Wilderness and i’d like a timing chain.
Thanks.

Subaru began switching over from EJ to F series engines around 2017, F series was phased in across the various models over a few years, but I believe all models had F series by 2022 or so. Turbo 2.4 liter is an FA engine, 2.5 liter normally aspirated are FB engines. All F series engines will have timing chains, not belts. Forester and Outback in USA were updated to F series in 2020.

Generally speaking if an engine has a timing chain it's an interference engine meaning the pistons and valves occupy the same space at different times. If the timing goes off in an interference engine the engine self destructs for the most part. If engine timing is determined by a belt, the engine is likely a non interference engine meaning the engine simply quits running but there is no lasting damage.

I actually did recent research on this subject. Yes, they switched to chains from belts about a decade ago. Good thing, as chains will last the life of the vehicle, whilst belts must be changed at great expense to the owner. Plus, these engines are 'zero clearance ', meaning of a belt breaks or jumps, by-by engine!

Do the 2024 Crosstreks have the F series engines and the timing chain, or do they have a timing belt?
