Year, Make, Model, Engine size / version?
The marks on the belt will never line up after two turns (720 Deg).
The marks on the crank and cams will if correctly installed.
Poor quality belt? Worn cam gears?
Is the tensioner set correctly, new rollers and water pump?

2008 Impreza EJ25, new tensioner, pump, gear, and pullies.
Just installed the belt, and gear and pullies. Not yet pulled tensioner pin, not rotated crank.
Passenger side cam has a small play, moves 1/2 gear, after installing the belt.
Is it is normal for cam to rotate slightly.
Thanks for your help. can I consult you over facetime and pay your charges for time spent with me facetime to look into this.

A used timing belt?
Take up the play by releasing the tensioner pin. Double check the installation.
If correctly installed, turn the crank two completer turns (720 Deg) and the marks should line up.
(NOT the marks on the belt) Look at the marks on the cams and crank gears.
Not into facetime.

First, Thanks to Ecmbuster, "you are the man"
New timing belt from Aisin. see pictures. the 2 arrows on cams are at 2 O'clock. the notch is on left cam is at 12 O'clock. it is such a small difference which is bothering me.
2 questions 1) is it normal for cam to have a small play? 2) after pulling pin, 2 rotations, if it does not align, I remove belt and re-start.

The last video will answer the question. With time and stretch (belts stretch) the alignment will become closer to the indicated marks.
If the procedure and installation was accomplished according the the service instructions, two rotations will align the timing marks.

Thank You Ecmbuster. I found this on line. will count the teeth.
  • Z1: 46.8 tooth length
  • Z2: 43.7 tooth length
