In a nutshell, current wisdom holds that fixing my 1st gear wrx
grinding will probably all be covered under the 5yr/60K warranty - the
guess is that it's the 1st gear synchro...the transaxle's covered
under the 5yr/60K. Caveats: normal wearable portions, such as the
clutch, if involved, are not covered. The Subaru dealership in
Jackson treated me much better than another, unnamed, dealership - and
the Jackson dealership indeed experienced the grinding while test
driving my wrx (without my assistance I might add).

Subaru took care of me, and indeed I followed through and bought the
sti also (with all the same options I have on my wrx). Yes, my
decision to buy the sti was to a great extent politically motivated -
Subaru stuck by my first-year wrx, and I stuck by their first-year sti
(I did need a second car). I'm sure the sti will put a big smile on
my face, but honestly I'll not get rid of my wagon anytime soon (and
the sti does come with summer slicks folks, not off-road or winter
tires).

Of course: Note that if you're experiencing the 1st gear grinding too,
and a dealership also experiences it with your car, you indeed also
are probably covered under the 5yr/60K warranty.

Also remember that even if a manufacturer takes care of your car
problem (like a grinding clutch), reporting the problem to the NHTSA
is a *real* good idea. Recalls often don't happen by themselves. See
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/, complaint form. Imho driver ed classes
should tell new drivers about how to report 'problems' via the nhtsa
(& other govt channels).
