Sube AC ?

Does Sube cut out the AC compressor when accelerating?

Only if the engine is running hot/under too much load and in danger of
overheating. I drive a 1999 Subaru Forester, and have had that happen
only when offroad this summer and climbing *really* steep hills.

I THINK my wife's Outback does - but maybe in ECONO mode only? The
manual is vague in that section.

I have a vacuum cutout switch I would like to install if it doesn't do
it and I can figure where to. Great little item. I thought all cars
would have them now.

I believe my WRX suspends the AC when I tromp the gas pedal all the way
to the floor, but not under normal acceleration.

From the serv. manual for the 03 outback:

"When the ECM receives a full-throttle signal fromt he tps during
compressor operation, it deactivates de A/C relay to interrupt electric
current to the compressor magnetic clutch. This prevents the
degradation of accelearation performance."

what is ECONO mode?

VF

The wife's 03 OBW has a button that cycles through off-A/C-ECONO (also -
if I hold it down for 3 or so seconds it alters the brightness of the
climate display lights at night).
My 06 WRX is different though.

Is that on the NA or turbo? Do you know if they are the same, or what
they call it?

Does the OBW have Climate Control?

Econo mode is basically no AC compressor running. Usually on cars with
climate control. That's how you get just untreated (un-AC'd, really)
outside air, although frankly, on both of my CC-equiped cars, it
doesn't seem like you're REALLY get totally untreated outside air.

It is called the compressor acceleration cut system.

There was no turbo in the 2003 outback in the us afik. The system
should be present in both models though.

Yes, a sensor to measure the air temp, a solar sensor on the dash over
on the right under the window. makes up it's own mind about turning the
fan on full AFTER it warms up a little in the winter (so you don't get a
blast of cold air up the pants I guess) swithches from recirculate to
'fresh' after the car cools down enough on warm days, etc. Of course,
you can overide any of these manually. Seems my wife is never happy with
the machine;s decisions while I rarely take it off 'auto'. Sometimes I
will change it if I get interior windshield fogging.

The system in my WRX is a little trickier to manually control. But I
rarely do so. Even on extremely hot days it works well (though i do have
decent tint on the windows.)

I tried to cut/paste from the 03 OBW manual at www.my.subaru.com and did
get the table of contents but it couldn't find any of the sections I
clicked on.
The A/C may cut out as you suggest - but still the difference between
auto and econ is very unclear in the manual (Japlish I huess)

What i posted comes directly from the service manual, in the mechanical
function, HVAC, Compressor Control section.

From the manual too:

"When the auto switch is pressed for the second time, the compressor
operates in the Econ Mode. In the Econ mode, the ECM controls
compressor operation based on inputs from the intake air temperature
sensor. Compressor operating time in the Econ mode is shorter than in
the Auto mode"

AH - OK, that makes sense. THe OM makes no mention of use of the xtra
sensor input.

I know my 91 5spd 2.2 Liberty did but only on full throttle. Not sure with
our 99 O/B or more current range. Easy way to find out once it's broken in
though :)

Haven't figured out if I can rev the motor from under the hood, Can't
figure where much is yet((. Would be hard to tell if the AC cuts out
when accelerating, unless looking at the clutch, or if the AC dash
light goes off, but don't want to be looking at it while
accelerating.))
