I bought a subaru hybrid Forester touring. If you think this is the top of the line model you would be greatly mistaken! I travel a lot and I always update the maps in the cars GPS map program for every state I plan to travel through. A new bridge might be built and opened or a road may be washed out or closed. When I tried to update the maps in my new Touring It did not allow any update. I checked to be certain that I was connected to my router at home. It was!!! But it still would not update a single state's map. The car's central display does show a "map" icon. When I hit the map icon>Menu>settings> map update, it takes me to a screen showing the states with an icon on the right side of the screen showing an icon "update" with the size of each update. In my 2023 model all I had to do was click the update and it would start updating. This does not happen with the 2025 hybrid Forester touring. It just blinks and takes you back to the state listing with the message that charges may be incurred if an update is done on a cellular network. I was not on a cellular network!!!

I called Subaru Customer Advocacy, they opened a case because they didn't know why it wouldn't update. They would get back to me before the end of the day. They didn't!! I called today and I was told that although I bought a 2025 hybrid Forester touring model that the model didn't allow map updates because it was the standard model. I asked how many models they had of the touring and they said one. In other words the advertise and put an icon on the central display that uses only out of date maps. They suggested I look into buying a different model not a Forester, with the warning that I should check to be certain that even a different model allows updating.

Customer Advocacy could not tell me what models allowed map updating. I would have to check each car individually.

IS LISTING A GPS MAP on the central display deceptive - YES!!!!!!!

Another feature the 2025 Forester touring doesn't have is called homelink that allows you to control the garage door opener.

DON"T BUY A SUBARU HYBRID FORESTER TOURING EXPECTING THE TOP OF THE LINE FEATURES IT DOESN'T HAVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2018 forester touring only allowed 1 map update. I was supposed to b get 3. I called the dealer and they said I was only to get 1. I checked another source (don’t recall where; maybe the car sticker of all options) and it said 3. I didn’t fight it as the 3 year time frame was almost up. I didn’t like the nav system anyway as way too slow.

When I had a problem with 2016 Outback GPS, (under warranty) the service manager where I bought the car said "I don't know anything about GPS. you will have to fix it yourself." Another manager said the GPS needed to be replaced, apparently it was a common problem. Have my old Garmen with lifetime free updates as back-up.

When you buy Subaru, you always need additional items as Back-Up !

I have Back-Up : Battery (from WalMart) ; GPS (from Garmin) ; Oil-Cap ( YOU WILL HAVE TO THINK THAT ONE OUT FOR YOUR SELF ... !) ; Drive-Shaft ( allows ME to have my vehicle TOWED on Dolly behind my Motor-Home !) ; Engine-Oil-Dip-Stick ( similiar to Oil-Cap .... !!) ; DORMAN #65219 Oil-Drain-Plug ( Look up on E-Bay , picture should explain everything, except this plug fits SEVERAL DRAIN HOLES on my Subaru ... !!!!) ; and I'm sure there are MORE,

Radio + BlueTooth : BUT the DCM was ... and STILL is ... a battery killer !
My Battery Solution : #1) Back-Up Battery ; #2) Battery maintainer for evenings & over WeekEnds ; #3) Transfered DCM-Power-Source from Constant-12Volts TO Switched (only when RUNNING !) 12Volts (the BROWN FUSE PORTS @ MB ; #4) Set of TRUCKER Battery Jumper Cables for other HapLess Subaru Drivers that I pass dead along roads .... !!!!!

The Last-Revision : gives me FULL DCM FUNCTION REALLY CHEAP ( $$$ , otherwise !) , and SHUTS OFF ALL DCM DARK-CURRENT , and its other failure problems , since there is ZERO Power to the D(amn)CM when the Vehicle is Not Running !!!

I much prefer using Google Maps or Waze - via Android Auto -- because they display traffic problems in real time and are always up-to-date. They will reroute you on-the-fly if changes arise. I'm sure Apple has a comparable service.

That works UNTIL you are in the Colorado Rockies (OR DEEPER .. !!!) and can not get Google reception ... then the Resident DownLoaded Maps (Garmin- !) still work , as long as a couple GPS Satellites are somewhere overhead ... !

Garmins work everywhere in the Wild, unless you are Splunking ... !!! In which case , a Magnetic Compass may be your only "option" .... on how to "GO-HOME" !!!

ENJOY WHAT DOES WORK FOR NOW ... as the Foreign Powers are working on How To Kill Our GPS Systems ..... !

If you know ahead of time that you may be travelling where cell tower reception may be spotty, just download the maps in Google Maps before you leave.
