Hello everyone!

I have a Subaru Outback 2.0 Boxer diesel 150hp year 2010 with a broken engine.

I found another engine to buy that’s also 2.0 Boxer diesel 150hp BUT from 2017 instead. There are some visible differences between the engines.

Is it possible to change the engine with the 2017 one despite the little visible differences?

Thanks in advance!

Have a conversation with a qualified Boxer expert. There may be parts transfers because of emissions related components.
The problem will be with the engine management (ECU). The ECU will adjust the fuel maps and active emissions standards dependent on the engine model and year.
Before any attempt, at least have an expert measure the engine compression and internal intake for debris, soot, etc.
Match all the wiring harness connections from one to the other.
At least have both service manuals handy.
Ensure the DPF is cleaned and exhaust pressure sensor tested when assembled and ready to run.
Have the correct oil and reset the oil counter with a scan tool or with the document supplied.
The "exhaust back pressure" is an indicator of the DPF filters' status. The higher the pressure reading the more it's restricted.
It should be near zero millibars at idle and around 10 to 40 millibar at 2000 rpm.
