Yep. When the fuel gauge comes to "Empty", I can generally put
8-8.5 gallons in the tank. Total capacity is 11 gallons. With regard
to the milage, I am getting 26-27 mpg in the city and 30-33 highway
(manual).

I've heard on a couple of occasions that japanese car manufaturers are
so concerned with the negative image Americans would have if they saw
one of their vehicles stranded on the roadside that they purposefully
decided to be extremely conservative when choosing the threshold at
which the low fuel light would illuminate.
Just about every japanese auto I've owned would go 60-100 miles after
the light came on, maybe more. Perhaps this started with fuel gauges?

I recall an old Dick van Dyke episode where Rob sold his Italian
sportscar because it actually had a dry tank the moment the fuel gauge
registered empty.

Yeah, along the lines of the "idiot light" thread, I've noticed that when I
fill up, I can drive 100 km (hwy)before the needle moves off of full. 150km
later it is on 3/4. 120km to 1/2, 100 to 1/4 and 80 to empty. I once drove
another 100 km on with the light on and the needle on empty, and even then,
I still had 5 litres in the tank!

No exactly a precision gauge!

Hi,
Who said it is precision gauge. No gauges on automobile dash is
precision like airplane cockpit gauges. Once you get familiar with
the gauges, still it is more useful than idiot lights.

Correct. And to Subaru's credit, the car manual even says that once the
light comes on you have another 10 litres (1/6 of the tank).

Hi All!

I've always made it a point to toss a full gas can in the back, and
then deliberately run my cars out of gas just so I'll _know_ where I
stand relative to the gauge. FYI, they vary even among cars of the
same year and model, and some are noticeably more linear than others.
My '02 WRX starts sputtering right when the needle hits bottom; about
45-50 miles after the nag-light comes on. It is pretty severely
non-linear as well; from a topped off tank to the 1/2 full mark is
actually nearly 2/3 of the tankfull gone.

ByeBye! S.
