Subaru Forster line keep assist without turning on cruise control

I had a 2021 Subaru Forester, and the steering assist worked well when we pressed the 'steering wheel' button on the steering wheel. We didn’t need to turn on cruise control to activate it. But now, after switching to a 2025 Forester, that button doesn’t seem to do anything if cruise control is off. Is this how it’s designed to work, or could there be an issue with my current Eyesight system?
