I don’t mind the auto stop/start feature.
(There is a fascinating and fairly brief explanation video on YouTube posted by “the car care nut,” for those who are interested.)

My question is this:
When I stop at a stoplight, and the car turns off, it randomly turns back on. My foot is still on the brake( or not, if I’m using the auto hold) and there seems to be no reason for the engine to turn back on.
Also, when I turn into the garage and shift into park, the car turns off, but before I have a chance to actually turn the car off, the engine starts up again!
I’m sure the issue is the same, and it’s kind of annoying.
Does anybody know whether this is normal?
Thank you in advance.

Possibly your battery is low or on its last leg. The system reads battery voltage and will,in cases, keep the engine running. Would not hurt to have a diagnostic ran. Any codes being thrown?

The car only has 1500 miles, so I doubt it’s a battery problem. I may be doing something wrong without realizing it. A lot of people don’t looked the auto start/stop feature, but I don’t mind it. I just wish it wouldn’t activate when I’m trying to turn off the car, haha

If you do a lot of short driving your battery may be low even though the vehicle is new. They do not charge themselves, thats the job of the alternator. Every time you start your car it takes 20 min drive time to recharge the battery to where it was.....

Are you suggesting that when I pull into the driveway, the car may be turning itself back on to complete recharging of the battery?

It is a possibility. Since this is a new vehicle, it might be prudent to schedule a service check at the dealership you purchased the vehicle from just to make sure all systems are operational....

When I am out driving, I usually tap the button to disengage auto-stop-start the first time it lurches at shutoff.
I can spare the cost of a few thousandths of a gallon of gas.

it's easy to disengage it permanently.

Weather or not it activates has several variables, one of it is brake pressure.

Yes, except I’m also using the auto hold feature so my foot is not on the brake at all.
What I’m in my garage, my foot is definitely on the break until I shift into Park, and that is when the engine turns back on

Note I am referring to brake pressure. With auto start enabled if you come to an easy slow stop with minimum brake pressure the auto stop will not occur. Otherwise auto stop occurs after 30 seconds (I think 30 seconds).

Where I work if I forget to kill auto stop a situation comes up similar to what you describe. I park the car and shortly after the engine stops. If I release the brake the engine restarts. Now if I push the button before the restart occurs and start to exit it tells me to turn off the engine when the engine is already off. If I ignore the warning and exit I believe something I occasionally see occurs.

If I remote start the car an error occurs which states the remote start failed because the car is not in park. Odd because on a couple of occasions when this came up the car actually did start and is in park. The system appears to be a little buggy.

I noticed the same with my brand new Crosstrek Wilderness. Of course since then it got colder and the feature does not engage. No need to muse about it on my end, mother nature addressed any potential problems.

I have owned both 2019 XV petrol and now a 2022 XV hybrid. Both cars have randomly started running ICE when in my carport and about to turn them off. I wouldn't be worried - this is progress and with the hybrid you can't even disable stop start. My wife had Fiat 500s with stop start. She now has a 2024 Abarth and that wonderfully is 'Stop start' free. I don't think it makes a jot of difference to fuel economy, but is just another expensive ( think battery) annoyance.

A battery like anything else can have internal issues, I had an interstate battery manifest issues 2 months from purchase.

I am not saying that is your issue, probably is not but until you figure it out, a possibility.
