R.I.P. '99 Legacy Outback

J

Jim Stewart

This afternoon I was heading home from shopping.
I waited at a red light until it turned green,
went out into the intersection, saw a blur coming
at me from the left, and I swear to God, thought
"this is gonna hurt". I hit the car, spun
about 270 degrees, airbags went off, car totaled.

After everything came to a stop, the next thing
I noticed was what a horrible smell the airbags
left.

Known injuries are ringing ears and bruises
and abrasions on my forearms from the airbag.

The front of the Outback appeared to crumple
as designed. I couldn't take a close look due
to the police keeping me away.

Seven great years with the car and 128,000 miles.
I'll miss her. Just did a half-shaft and a new
battery last month.

Since there's a claim pending, that's all I can
say for now.

Glad you're OK... sorry about the accident. It's something that could happen
to any of us.
I know how you feel about the car... we do seem to form a 'relationship'
with them, don't we?

You should have been *more* injured. Alittle extra money will get you
a nicer new car since the other idiot was at fault

Hope the other person is too - the idiot.
Can you get the security screen and cargo tray outta the car? Sell, 'em
on ebay!

Don't count on getting more than book value. Idiot that turned in
front of me wiped out my Forester. Only extra money I got was to
settle claim. I was worried about further damage to an existing
condition (arthritic neck) and refused to settle immediately. Best to
hang tough with insurance companies. I also learned that when repair
estimate approaches about 75% of book value, they will give you book
value rather than risk going over repair estimate. I took insurance
company 8 days to give me estimate, during which time book value
decreased by $100. You can bet I was pissed.

What a troll...

Unfortunately, he's right. My son's insurance company paid out
$125,000 to settle upcoming trial of woman he rear ended. Neither car
needed repair but she had an MRI or something showing back injury and
the way she cried and carried on in pre-trial hearings, insurance
company decided it was better to pay off. These claims are like the
lottery to a lot of dirt bags out there looking for money.

My doctor didn't even see me after my accident. I felt OK but went to
hospital since I am on blood thinner and worried about bruising.
Hospital told me to see doctor in a few days and I had to convince him
that I was not after money, just worried about my health and follow-up.

He is not one of those doctors that will do anything for a buck, but
there are a lot of them out there.

glad your not hurt to bad.just yesterday where I live someone got creamed by
a minivan while driving an outback.the outback was ripped in half on impact
from the rear seats back.the driver and his wife lived 1 child was ejected
and killed and the second kid was ejected and thrown 75 ft and only had a
scratch on him.
sounds like the person who hit you went through a red light. sue em. also
tell your lawyer to supoena the other drivers cell phone records. if you
happen to live in a state where its illegal to drive while on the phone.

It's a sad day when we lose a "favorite" car, but the fact you got out
w/ only minor bumps and bruises is the IMPORTANT part. Glad to hear
you're ok.

The H-6 is a little quieter and a little quicker
than the 2.5 DOHC that I had before, but not
enough that I'd pay the new-car premium for
one.

Congratulations on the new purchase. I take it that you
don't like Legacy. Is the lack of H-6 option the only reason?

The potenza tires are great for 30k miles then they get scary. When
new they were awesome in the snow and rain. Handled great too. I'd
avoid the new subarus as styling and comfort are ten steps behind the
04's . Should buy another new car. You will be putting money into the
04. Mine feels a lot looser at 75k than it did new. I know the engine
will last but suspension is weak- already had a blown strut replaced.

The '99 was indeed declared totalled and I got a fair
insurance settlement along with a promise of a token
pain-and-suffering check.

We headed up to Gold Rush Subaru in Auburn,
California on saturday to look for a replacement.
I had been driving an 06' Outback that my insurance
supplied via Hertz. I didn't like the higher ride
height and decided to look for a pre-05 Outback.

Gold Rush had a 35th anniversery '04 Outback
in very good condition. H-6 engine, auto trans,
heated seats, auto sensor mirror for a good
price. My wife fell in love with it so we
took it. I have to replace the Crapenza® tires
with something better and get a wheel alignment,
but other than that it runs real nice.

The H-6 is a little quieter and a little quicker
than the 2.5 DOHC that I had before, but not
enough that I'd pay the new-car premium for

If someone could tell me the difference between
a '04 Outback and an '04 Legacy, maybe I could
answer your question. As far as I can see, it's
mostly styling and possible a slightly higher
ride height on the Outback. In any case, either
one would do the mission. The H-6 was just a
little gravy on the plate.

Hmm, I just checked the prices for 07 outbacks and they are within
$300 from Legacy. I hadn't checked prices recently and remembered
outbacks were around $24k 5-6 years ago. Nevermind.
