Well here I am an old man that decided to finally purchase a NEW car. I've had two used Bajas, and a couple of other Subaru's. The thing I disliked most that they were all very very noisy cars, specially from the front windows.
So I had decided PRIORITY ONE was silence. The new car had to be quiet. But when we tested a 2018 Subaru Legacy it won out because the steering and brakes were perfect, exactly like our 2004 BMW 530i.
So we brought it home and after a month I'm griping again that Subaru's are noisy. So I did some comparing to our BMW which is 14 years old with an in-line 6 cylinder, and 247,000 miles to date.

Here's the results: using a decibel app on my cellphone leaning on the windshield.
idling, 2200 rpm 2500rpm:
76 vs 76.3 88 vs 86 88 vs 88.6
IN GARAGE LIBBY OLIVIA
IDLING, PHONE ON WINDSHIELD 76 76.3
2000 RPM, PHONE ON WINDSHIELD 88 86
2500 RPM, PHONE ON WINDSHIELD 88 88.6
2000 RPM, PHONE UNDER ENGINE 96.2 95.3
PHONE INSIDE BY FIREWALL, 220 RPM 87 77
COASTING, HALF MILE, 10 TO 42 MPH 86.3-93.1 82.8-90.7

Sorry this is my first post, and it was not complete...anyhow, seems to me the real issue is lack of insulation in the cabin. the inside cabin by the firewall is a difference of 10 DB's when both cars are doing 2200 rpm? and coasting over a half mile on a newly paved road the Beamer is three to four decibels quieter than a 4-cylinder Subaru.
Anyhow; I am reading about adding insulation to the cabin to make it quieter by blocking and/or masking primarily engine noise.
If anybody has had experience with this issue I would appreciate your thoughts. thank you.
