Oil filter discrepency

For my 01 Outback 4 cyl. I've been using the OEM Subaru oil filter. I decided to save a couple bucks and bought a Fram, the right part number, from the local parts store. The O-ring is the same diameter but the filter body is larger. Whereas the OEM filter fit perfectly at the connection, the Fram body sticks out over the flange. I installed the Fram, tightened it as it should be and after starting the car, oil gushed all over from the filter. The O-ring was not wrinkled and the filter was tightened properly. I checked the parts filters sold by Fram, Purolator and a cheapie brand and they're all the same size, a bigger body than the OEM. So, was my Fram leaker an isolated incident? Are the other filters OK to use?
