I went to my tires rotated and the mechanic said that the inside of my rear tires was severely worn. The last time those tires were off the car for brake work at approx. 32,000, the car has 42,000 miles on it. How could this happen? I believe the dealership put the rear tires back on after the brake work in such a way that they messed up the alignment. Does this sound right ?

Either your alignment's off or your wheel bearings are possibly getting bad. Strictly brake work shouldnt have had any effect on your alignment though

Then that would have been how the car was delivered new at the time of purchase from the factory ? Nothing else had been done prior to the removal of the tires for the brake work. (?) Thanks for the response.

if they didnt notice excessive odd tire wear at any of your previous appointments it almost certainly didnt come that way from factory, you would have noticed much sooner. overinflated tires can also cause that problem and its an easy thing to check

A driver may have hit/driven over something and thrown alignment out. Easy enough to check/diagnose.
