Noisy rear suspension

Florian Feuser

My 98 GT Wagon has developed a clunky sound coming from the rear right.
This is when crossing recessed manhole covers, minor bumps in the road.
Seems to be more pronounced at lower speeds, too.

What parts of the rear suspension are likely to wear out at 130k miles?

Before you start tackling the suspension, check to see that it isn't
the back seats. My OBS started some light klunking on bumps after less
than 50k kms and it was just the latch that holds up the rear seats. I
could put some electrical tape to snug up the latch, but that doesn't
last long. Now I just ignore the sound.

Looks like Claude replied to me instead of the group:

Hello Florian,

I have a 1997 OBW with a similar problem a few years ago. It was the
bushings of the cross bars attached to the torsion bar that were worned

out.
They changed the two links and it fixed my problem. Check also the
bushing
of the torsion bar itself.

Before attempting to pay for new cross bar linked to the torsion bar,
Check
if it would be possible to changed just the bushings of the cross bars.

It
would be a lot cheaper than to pay 64$ CAN + 15% tax each like I did..

Good
luck.
