Noisy brakes in 2k2 outback sport

C

Chris Beatie

I have a 2k2 Subaru Imprezza outback sport with 30K miles. The front brakes
have started to make noise when applying light pressure to the brakes. I
thought the pads were going bad but under inspection they're at about 70%.
I've spoken with a few people and I've gone through everything. I've
beveled the pads. I've cleaned and lubed everything meticulously, and still
they squeak!!!
It just seems odd that these brakes never made noise before and suddenly 30K
miles later they're noisy.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Sand the pad surface to remove any glaze or shine, then use a pad prep on
the back of the pads, or, as many garages do, put some high temp silicone
seal on the pads where they touch the caliper surfaces and install. The
sealant prevents vibration of the pad and often cures noisy brakes.

Mine have been noise from day one (MY02) it generally happens after not
using them for a while, you can quick fix it by driving for a bit then apply
the break and accelerate at the same time for about 10 seconds and they are
as good as gold.... for a while. Try not breaking with the gears if that is
what you are doing allot.

OH... my wife's MY99 does the same thing.

There is spray for the backs of brake shoes. There should be TWO pads on the
back of the pads to stop squeaks.. Just did mine..

Sounds like glazed pads and/or rotors. Sandpaper the pad friction surface.
Sand or have the rotors refinished(not cut) to remove the glaze. ed

I went to NAPA ceramic pads on my 97 sport and 99 legacy outbacks (though I've
since traded my 99 for an Xterra). They solved the sounds, squeaking, and
pretty much any other noise from the brakes. They're a bit more expensive than
aftermarket semi-metalic pads but less than OEM pads. They also are supposed to
fade less and are less abrasive on rotors yet stop much better than the OEMs, at
least that's what I've found and I live in the mountains where brakes are abused
just by driving to work.

Thanks...
