noise after exh install

2005 WRX

I went catless (PDE up-pipe, Invidia DP/Mid-Pipe, OEM muffler) and now the
car makes a "whir" sound much like VW bug makes, between 2000 - 3500 RPM,
under all load conditions. Is this right? Could a leak be causing this
noise? I hate getting on the gas and sounding like a suped up bug from the
70's. Perhaps I should have left one cat in....

Most likely you're hearing more of what was
already there, now that your cats are gone...
can't absolutely say that (from here!), you might
have a leak, that's not uncommon, but you will
absolutely hear more turbine noise.

I have read posts on some WRX boards that after installing an up-pipe they
describe sounding like a VW bug as well. Maybe the cats muffle that sound
some.

Believe it or not, Porsche and Subaru are not the
only makers that use a boxer layout ;-)

An exhaust leak usually makes a whistling noise. Whirring noises are
likely the normal engine noises that you hear now that you have no cats.

To check for an exhaust leak pop the hood and have someone rev the motor
for you. You should get whistling and an exhaust smell.
