Can anybody confirm what i already suspect, have just replaced a ej20 single
cam engine and the transmission pump is not functioning, i suspect that the
drive off the torque converter has beed damaged during refit.

Your worse fear is correct. This is what happens when the TC is not fully
seated. It likes to hang up about 1/4" before full engagement. Nothing
to do now except to pull it and start over again.

Hi John,
txs for your reply, i have had a look down inside the gearbox
shaft and it doesnt look healthy, i think the trans will have to come out as
there was a bit of a clunking sound as the engine came up to it. i have
pulled and refitted three times now and the last thing i did was fitted the
tc onto the trans shaft and it fits up without feeling like the pump drive
is slotting in.
i also have noticed in the workshop manual they advise not to force the
engine up to the trans as i suspect that this type of damage will occur.
pitty this has happened as the replacement engine sounds sweet as.
thanks again for the advice.
cheers phil

Well, you aren't the first to do this. I did the exact same thing the
first time I replaced a transaxle in an XT6. The broken transmission can
be repaired if you want to pull all the guts out of the front.

Cheers John,
i have pulled the trans out and have popped the front
diff off. looks like the coupler to the tc is not keying in as it should so
i was wondering if the next step was to dig a little deeper, in other words
do i take the front off the trans to get to the drive? if i were to do this
i would imagine that standing the trans on its end would be adviseable as to
avoid things dropping out all over the place, or can things be fished out
and replaced from the front?
its all expereince i suppose, i can tell you that i have found that auto
trans fluid is great for taking the muck off your hands after working on the
damn thing. lol
txs again for the advice.
