New faboulous Subaru engines coming soon?

All of us probably heard about the new Subaru diesel
engine, which will most likely NOT make it to the US
-Subaru does not have the urea type emissions converter
technology that is needed to meet ultra-restrictive US
laws, passed recently thanks to vigouurous actions of
US automotive lobby.

Now what about the new Subaru petrol engines?

From what I've heard or read in media there is a
2.0 liter, 200hp engine coming to US 2010 Legacy.

200hp for 2.0 litre is a lot, and I deduce this will have
to be a high compression direct fuel injection type
engine. There was some Subaru talk about DI,
direct injection technology a year or two ago, and
recently information was released that the new petrol
engine is built utilising knowledge aquired in the
development of the diesel.

Also they mention that the petrol engines stroke
will be lenghtened to a square type configuration-
where bore diomension equals stroke- more typical
of a diesel engine.

I figure, they are coming with a petrol diesel type
2.0 liter powerplant with direct fuel injection and
high compression.

The current silence about what exactly is coming
in 2010 suggests to me that Subaru might be up to
something, and is just keeping quite for the moment,
trying to sell as many old Legacy's as it can, before
making public the big news.

Anyone have any info to confirm or deny above
speculation?

200 HP is a lot for 2.0 liters, but they were making significantly
more than that with the early (to the U.S.) WRX engines, which were
also 2.0 liters. Maybe they are being hush hush because it really
isn't an achievement for them. That is unless this is an NA engine.
That would be worth touting, but also not a first, and it would be up
to the public to decide if any compromise to the torque curve is worth
the high peak power. That sacrifice woudl likely be less with direct
injection though.

It is a non-turbo engine, at least at this point that is what they
are quoting power for.
