I purchased a super nice 2006 Tribeca B6. The engine had a bad lower end knock. I bought an Engine and Transmission from an area salvage yard. A friend installed and it runs like a kitten.
BUT it seems the Transmission Control Unit is bad. Took it to a few local dealers and all say the same.
Here is where I run into problems. Subaru apparently can only sell a part by VIN number. I am told since the engine (and tranny) could be from one of four or five different Subaru models. I can take a chance and order new from Subaru (just to clarify, the local dealer is trying really hard to help me out and save me hundreds of dollars, but Subaru Corp. are zero help in tracking down the correct TCM).
These are the numbers stamped on the top of the transmission: 035673 and TG5C7CVAAA-Y2.
I have looked everywhere I know to locate a compatible module. If anyone has a reputable salvage/parts house I could contact, or point me in a direction that will help me get this car on the road) I would be most appreciative.
What I have tried.
About a dozen Subaru dealer parts shops. They all want to sell me a new TCM for a 2006 Tribeca B6, but if it does not work I still own it.
Subaru Corporate - I can subscribe to their database and manuals (for a super "low" yearly fee!) and search through them
Local salvage yards - Don't have compatible part OR want a part number.
The Autozones, and similar parts stores - Don't have compatible part OR want a part number.
Email or call random Subaru "parts specialists" from the internet - Want part number
Thank you in advance for any info.
Mark

The problem with that is this is not the OEM transmission. The "replacement" trans fits a half dozen other Subaru models. And if the TCU is not set for the gear ratios, etc it will not work.
Thank you for the link. I ordered one that is supposed to be for the transmission I have, we will see.
Just frustrating, that one part can't be found even by Subaru unless you have the VIN. Crazy.
Again thank you.

Subaru's parts catalog shows part # 31711AJ676 for all the different trans types.

That unit is specifically for the Tribeca, not the replacement transmission. At $875 (includes tax) it is a crapshoot, and if it does not work, NO REFUNDS. The dealer has been trying to help me locate the info to find an appropriate TCU for the replacement trans, and they have been having no luck, even when queries made to Subaru Corporate (No VIN no part!)
And the cost of the TCU is more than I paid for the car (which other than the engine and TCU is super clean, and runs like a charm). and the replacement engine and trans.
Thank you for the link, I appreciate it.
Mark.
