Mystery clunck when shifting, coming from rear of forester?

Sometimes when upshiting though the gears, I will hear something that
sounds between a click and a clunk coming from the rear end of my
Forester - usually from 1st to 2nd. If it were any other vehicle I
would guess a CV joint, but with a Suby I have no idea? Any help? Its
not that loud but you defintately hear it.

it's the differential carrier/subframe moving on its rubber mounts.

a) shift more gently. you're shock-loading the driveline...
b) find an aftermarket bushing kit to replace the pliable rubber
bushes with something stiffer.

if you're hearing the noise all the time, and not just on spirited
acceleration runs, your existing bushes may be shot.

My 2000 Forester has done this since new and I believe it's the variable
clutch pack changing torque setting. It has done it so long;61,000 miles
that if it stops I'd be wondering if all is OK. eddie

I have a 1999 Outback (75k miles) that also makes a somewhat heavy
"clunk" or crunch sound when upshifting from 1st to 2nd.

There is also a slight rattling, like marbles in a tin can, when in
low gear.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think the "clunk" is related to how "hard" I am shifting - It
seems to almost happen at random, and I have not been able to "make "
it happen by simply shifting hard.
In any case its coming up for its 30,000 mile service so I will bring
it to the tech's attention.
