mysterious AC problem in 2001 LL Bean

The problem is so random that the shop can't duplicate it. Here are the symptoms: AC will start blowing warm air occaisionally. However, if I turn off the engine for even 2 seconds, the problem goes away when I re-start the car and the AC is fine again, often for days. Turning the AC off while the engine is running does not help.

I assume there must be a sensor or relay that tells the AC that the engine is running, but I am not sure what to have replaced.

Any advice appreciated.
